Talk about gay cinema these days always ends up converging around Brokeback Mountain, but Hollywood has had a longstanding tradition of homosexuality in movies. Not just that, but womenfriends argue that whatever the men can do, the women can do better.

So after drooling over Scarlett Johanson and Penelope Cruz in Woody Allen's next, here's a look at the more serious stuff.

These are great, relevant, important films exploring lesbianism -- in extremely different ways. Some are funny, some erotic, some political, some profound. Each is, in their own right, a must-watch.

Chasing Amy

It starts off as just another two guys in love with a girl movie, as comic-book artists Ben Affleck and Jason Lee compete for the attentions of Joey Lauren Adams, who turns out to be a lesbian.

She tries to work things out with Affleck, but can't change who she is, and the dynamic between the two gives us insight among much humour.

Mulholland Drive

David Lynch's darkly fascinating film was about more than just a lesbian relationship, but the frenetic chemistry lead characters Betty (Naomi Watts) and Rita (Laura Elena Harring) stumble upon -- and the realistically wild and passionate lovemaking scene that follows -- is startling, candid and powerful
